TORONTO, May 1, 2016 /CNW/ - Following an out of this world Mystery Box Challenge and a classic Tag Team Elimination Challenge, MASTERCHEF CANADA judges Michael Bonacini, Alvin Leung, and Claudio Aprile revealed that PhD law student Terry Adido from Edmonton, Alta., would be leaving the competition. On the upcoming all-new episode of MASTERCHEF CANADA next Sunday, May 8 at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CTV and the CTV GO app, the remaining Top 6 home cooks split into teams for a restaurant takeover at R&D, owned by judge Alvin Leung and MASTERCHEF CANADA Season 1 winner Eric Chong.
On tonight's episode of MASTERCHEF CANADA, the Top 7 home cooks were launched into outer space with a special Mystery Box Challenge, where they had to cook for true Canadian hero Colonel Chris Hadfield – the first Canadian astronaut to walk in space. The Mystery Boxes contained authentic space food as the ingredients for the challenge: freeze-dried fruits and vegetables, candied salmon, bite-sized, freeze-dried beef, and nuts. The home cooks had only 45 minutes to prepare a gourmet meal to impress Colonel Hadfield. The judges selected three dishes to taste, beginning with Matthew Astorga's smoked salmon parfait with a walnut crumb. Veronica Cham was also called up for her chicken congee with a Japanese omelet, as was Mary Berg for her strawberry-raspberry crème brûlée in a tart shell. At the end of the challenge, Colonel Hadfield revealed that Matthew's creativity and innovation shined through and named him the winner of the Mystery Box Challenge, guaranteeing him a spot in the Top 6.
The remaining six home cooks had to participate in an Elimination Challenge that took the form of a classic MASTERCHEF CANADA Tag Team Challenge, with each team having to replicate a complex and exquisite platter of five different hors d'oeuvres. Matthew was also given the advantage of picking the teams for the Tag Team Elimination Challenge, and paired Mary with Jeremy Senaris, Veronica with April Lee Baker, and Terry with Shawn Karls. As with every Tag Team Challenge, only one home cook can prep at a time, while their partner watches from the sidelines. At regular intervals throughout the challenge, the judges yelled switch, and the home cooks had to swap places.
With only 90 minutes on the clock, the teams started preparing their hors d'oeuvres. Veronica and April Lee got off to a rough start, as April Lee spread their tuile dough too thin, while Jeremey and Mary worked well together despite their different cooking styles. At Shawn and Terry's station, the atmosphere was eerily calm, but when the time was up, Shawn noticed Terry had incorrectly filled their tulie battered cornets with the sweet potato and apple garnish originally meant for the pork wellington, instead of the halibut ceviche. In the end, Mary and Jeremy were named the winners of the challenge, and will be team captains in next week's restaurant takeover. Terry and Shawn were the last home cooks standing, but it was ultimately Terry's error that left the judges no choice but to send him home.
On an all-new episode of MASTERCHEF CANADA (Sunday, May 8 at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CTV and CTV GO), the remaining Top 6 home cooks must master upscale Canadian Asian cuisine, when they take over R&D, the upscale restaurant located in the heart of Toronto's Chinatown district, owned by judge Alvin Leung and MASTERCHEF CANADA Season 1 winner Eric Chong.
The remaining Top 6 home cooks vying for the title of MASTERCHEF CANADA and the $100,000 cash prize are:
- April Lee Baker, a Homemaker from Calgary, Alta.
- Jeremy Senaris, a Building Plan Examiner from Winnipeg, Man.
- Mary Berg, an Insurance Broker from Toronto, Ont.
- Matthew Astorga, Digital Design Consultant from Pitt Meadows, B.C.
- Shawn Karls, a Doctor from Montréal, Qué.
- Veronica Cham, a Lawyer from Toronto, Ont.
