A Night for Peace in the Middle East - Shining a Spotlight on Girls
TORONTO, May 24, 2016 /CNW/ - On Wednesday, May 25th, 2016, The Daughters For Life Foundation will be honouring four exceptional advocates for girls and women at its 4th annual Gala in downtown Toronto:
- Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, whose parents will be in attendance to accept her award;
- Metis writer and broadcaster Maria Campbell, whose groundbreaking 1973 memoir Halfbreed is widely hailed as initiating a rebirth of Aboriginal literature in Canada;
- Renowned writer and feminist Michele Landsberg and her husband, the incomparable Stephen Lewis, for their joint efforts in promoting gender rights.
Daughters for Life was created by Dr. Izzeldine Abuelaish, a Palestinian medical doctor whose three daughters and a niece were tragically killed when shells struck their home during the 2009 Gaza war. Instead of seeking revenge, Dr. Abuelaish became a fervent advocate for peace and reconciliation, writing "I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor's Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity," an international best seller, translated into over 20 languages. Now living in Canada, Dr. Abuelaish, who has been three times nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, has dedicated his life to promoting education for women as the key to peace in the Middle East.
Shlomi Eldar, the Israeli journalist and filmmaker who was the first to speak to Dr. Abuelaish after the attack on his home, in a devastating phone call broadcast live to a national Israeli audience, will also be in attendance, interviewed on-stage by Louise Dennys, Executive Publisher and Executive Vice-President of Random House of Canada .
Erin Davis, the host of the Morning Show on 98.1 CHFI will MC the gala.
