A personal encounter with abstraction - The Musée d'art contemporain takes part in the Journées de la culture 2013

MONTREAL, Sept. 25, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - This year, as part of the seventeenth edition of the Journées de la culture, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (MAC) invites the public to join in various activities tying in with its permanent exhibition A Matter of Abstraction. On Saturday, September 28 and Sunday, September 29, visitors of all ages can take in the exhibition A Matter of Abstraction free of charge. They can also give free rein to their creativity and their wildest imaginations in the Sunday Combos-tours followed by stimulating workshops. Two times are available for the Combos: either 1:30 or 2:30 p.m.

To help visitors get the most out of the exhibition, educator/guides from the MAC team will lead tours of the show. On Saturday, September 28, tours will be held at 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., in French, while on Sunday, tours will be given at 1 p.m. in English and 3 p.m. in French.

Finally, the museum will be participating in the Arts Marathon, an activity for the general public that will be held on Sainte-Catherine, in front of the MAC. During this activity organized by the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership, the museum will be offering novel workshops called Abstraction in Action. Admission to the MAC will be free throughout the Journées de la culture weekend.

A Matter of Abstraction: The Exhibition

A personal encounter with the artists and artistic movements that have defined the development of abstraction since the 1940s in Québec and across Canada: that's what is in store for visitors to A Matter of Abstraction, a permanent exhibition organized by Musée curator Josée Bélisle. Following a chronological and thematic approach, it showcases key works from the museum's Permanent Collection, which today form a priceless public heritage. On view are pieces by such artists as Paul-Émile Borduas, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Marcelle Ferron, Guido Molinari, Claude Tousignant, Fernand Leduc, Jacques Hurtubise, Jean McEwen, Armand Vaillancourt, Robert Roussil and Françoise Sullivan. In connection with this show, the MAC is also presenting On Abstraction II: Remarks on Colours, a selection of sixteen works produced between 1967 and 2010, and representative of various movements and disciplines, including informal abstraction, minimal art and conceptual art, and painting, sculpture, photography and installation. Artists featured: Nicolas Baier, Pierre Dorion, Roland Poulin, Jack Bush, Ron Martin, Daniel Buren, Bernard Frize, Gary Hill, Alfredo Jaar, Sol LeWitt, Kenneth Noland, Shinique Smith and Pieter Laurens Mol.
