TORONTO, Sept. 17, 2013 /CNW/ - Today the Ontario Government announced it was settling a class action lawsuit with people who once lived at the former Huronia Regional Centre. The suit alleged ongoing and systemic abuse towards the former residents of the Centre. As part of the settlement the government will issue a formal apology and establish a 35 million dollar fund for the 3700 survivors.
OASIS would like to acknowledge the Government of Ontario for ensuring the plaintiffs representing the former residents did not have to endure a lengthy and potentially painful trial process.
While we cannot undo the wrongs of the past we can ensure a future where persons with Developmental Disabilities enjoy the same access to citizenship and opportunities as the rest of Ontarians. OASIS and its member agencies look forward to facilitating that future on behalf of the people we serve and support.
