A Spelling Bee with a Twist Challenges Students at Amiskwaciy Academy
EDMONTON, Dec. 11, 2013 /CNW/ - On December 12th, over a hundred students from Amiskwaciy Academy will participate in a spelling bee with a twist! The game - "Know your Words" will challenge the junior and senior high students to both spell the words and use them appropriately in a sentence.
The event is organized by the school and Frontier College and is sponsored by Deloitte. Frontier College's Community Coordinator Azmina Navodia is excited about the competition. "We've been running a Study Lounge at the school for a year and a half, and we always try and weave some fun into learning. This is a great way to encourage the students to read while raising awareness about the importance of good literacy skills."
Amiskwaciy Academy's Principal Fred Hines agrees. "Our students are exposed to authentic learning opportunities as they interact with one another in a fun learning environment. This is a great opportunity and partnership."
Frontier College's Navodia says the event, which she hopes will be an annual one, is a great example of what can be accomplished through community partnerships. "Frontier College is so lucky to have the support of Deloitte, a terrific public school like Amiskwaciy, and the CBC."
"Know your Words" will be hosted by CBC's Mark Harvey, and will run from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on December 12th at Amiskwaciy Academy, 101 Airport Road in Edmonton.
