Electronic Waste continues to be a significant environmental concern in Canada as many electronics contain toxic metals. The Statistics Canada Environmental Accounts & Statistics Division, Households and the Environment Survey, revealed that in 2011:
- 46% of Canadians had e-waste to dispose of.
- 23% of Canadian Households had a dead or unwanted computer, 18% had a dead or unwanted cell phone, 15% had a dead or unwanted fax machine, 24% reported having unwanted televisions and 13% had unwanted audio-video equipment to dispose of.
- 3% to 7% of e-waste ends-up in our landfills.
North Hill Centre has partnered with Waste Management and GEEP (Global Electronic Processing) and will host their one-day only "Drive Up & Drop Off" E-waste Event in the mall parking lot on the south side of the mall from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday, April 25th. Just look for the trucks and green arrows for traffic flow. Visit northhillcentre.com for a complete list of acceptable items. All collected items will be responsibly recycled.
"Twenty shopping centre across Canada will participate in the four hour challenge" indicated Domenic Imbesi, Regional Director, Marketing Retail Services East. "On April 25th from 11am to 3pm we are determined to make a difference within the communities that our shopping centres serve. Raising awareness of the impact of diverting e-waste from our landfills is timely as we celebrate earth week!"
"Electronic waste contains precious metals, glass, plastics and other valuable materials, and reusing them reduces the need to mine or fabricate raw materials. Rather than just disposing of them, we can reuse and recover this valuable material" suggests Bonney Rempel, Regional Director, Marketing Retail Services West.
