MONTREAL, May 25, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ - The Rock 'n' Roll Oasis Montreal Marathon & ½ Marathon is gearing up to be a running and music filled festival weekend on September 23 and 24. For its 27th edition, the event will be spread out on two days, a change long-awaited by participants. "We are very excited to finally bring this two-day format to Montreal. Our races fill up quickly, and now we'll be able to better respond to a growing demand in this market," indicated Competitor Canada's Executive Director Louis Malafarina.
Another change in 2017 is the 5K course, which will take runners into the streets of the Plateau Mont-Royal, passing on historical streets such as Cherrier, Saint-Hubert and Saint-Denis. "This new 5K course coincides with Montreal's 375th anniversary. We're offering new sightings and giving runners the opportunity to appreciate some of Montreal's traditional architecture along the course!" said Mr. Malafarina.
"Montreal stands out once again – in this case, as the ideal city for running! I commend the organizers of this popular and accessible sporting event that offers challenges for all race enthusiasts regardless of their age. I already know some people who are eagerly waiting for September 23 and 24 to come, and who will spend the summer to train. The Rock 'n' Roll Oasis Montreal Marathon is a flagship event that positively mobilizes our citizens and fosters the dynamism of the city's many community and private sports organizations," said Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre.
This year, the Sports Experts 5K and the P'tit Marathon 1 km Tel-jeunes races will be held on Saturday, and the 10K, Half, and Full Marathons, on Sunday. This split will allow for participants to take part in the Remix Challenge, a welcome addition for Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series enthusiasts and race participants looking for a little extra. The Challenge consists of completing two races: the 5K on Saturday and any one of the Sunday races to win a special edition Heavy Medal in addition to the medals earned for each race. Others will take advantage of the Challenge to warm up before running a longer distance the next day.
With over 37,000 participants expected at Quebec's most popular participatory sporting event over two days, "expect double the music and triple the cheers," said Mr. Malafarina with a smile. Indeed, participants and their supporters will enjoy a headlining show by Canadian rock group Moist on Sunday, in addition to over 20 fantastic bands along the main course.
This year again, all participants will get free access to the STM public transit network on the day of their race.
