Absolute Software Launches an Industry First with Theft Recovery for Android Tablets
Absolute Guarantees Theft Recovery & Data Delete Services for Android Tablets
VANCOUVER AND LAS VEGAS, Jan. 9, 2012 /CNW/ - Absolute® Software Corporation ("Absolute" or the "Company") (TSX: ABT), the leading provider of firmware-embedded endpoint security and management solutions, announced today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, that it has expanded the platform coverage of its industry leading service beyond desktops, laptops and Windows tablets to now include the availability of theft recovery services for Android tablets.
"With the inevitable expansion of consumerization or the "bring your own device" (BYOD) movement, many organizations are exposed to new security and manageability challenges as organizations allow for these new platforms and form factors to operate within their network. Our customers have looked to us to help them maintain their enterprise-grade support requirements in the face of these new challenges," states John Livingston, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Absolute Software. "With our patented persistence technology, organizations using Android tablets will now benefit from having a constant connection to the devices and, if the device is reported stolen, organizations can now reliably take action to mitigate the security risk of a potential data breach, recover lost or stolen devices, and make their overall environment more secure."
The addition of Theft Recovery to the existing Computrace® Mobile feature set for tablets on the Android platform provides our customers with a full cycle service that includes security and management options such as Device Freeze with end user messaging, Data Delete, and Geotechnology with geofencing, as well as other management options. Now, if an Android tablet with embedded Computrace persistence technology is reported stolen, the Absolute Theft Recovery team can use digital forensics to gather evidence and, working closely with local police, help solve the crime and recover the device. Theft recovery for Android devices, including tablets and smartphones, will be extended to Absolute's consumer offerings in the coming year.
Absolute's customers place a high degree of value in persistence technology. It provides them with a comprehensive view of all their mobile devices and allows them to take action on devices that are deemed to be at risk whether they are on or off the network.
"Computrace persistence technology built in to the devices in our deployment provides our company with the ability to accurately track our mobile assets through their useful lifetime beyond that of any other technology available," stated Deron Means, Information Security Officer for Harland Clarke. "Even in the event of an asset theft, persistence technology allows our company to maintain control over the unit. Persistence technology has also proven itself incredibly valuable in deterring any potential internal theft situations."

How Computrace Technology Works
Computrace and LoJack® for Laptops are powered by the Absolute Software patented Computrace persistence technology. When embedded in the firmware of computers from leading computer manufacturers*, Computrace can survive operating system re-installations, as well as hard-drive reformats, replacements and re-imaging, helping to ensure that the service is there when you need it most. Whether a Windows, Mac or Android device, the software is virtually undetectable and phones home to the Absolute Monitoring Center with location and asset information. If a computer is reported stolen, the Absolute Theft Recovery Team works on behalf of the customer to gather evidence from the computer to identify the thief's location, and then works with local police to get the computer back. Customers can also remotely delete data to help keep it out of the hands of unauthorized users - a reliable contingency in case data protection solutions fail. Computrace or LoJack for Laptops can be easily activated by customers when they install a license ranging from 1-3 years.
