Adam Logan spells V-I-C-T-O-R-Y at the 2013 Canadian national SCRABBLE® championship
Four-time winner to represent Canada at the 2013 World Championship
TORONTO, June 24, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - After four days of intense word play and a riveting best-of-five-finale, Adam Logan, a 38-year-old mathematician, civil servant and former world champion, spelled his way to the top and will be crowned the 2013 Canadian National SCRABBLE® Champion, .
Logan racked up major points on words such as GARDYLOO (68), EGLOMISE (65) and ZOECIA (34). He defeated co-finalist, Ross Brown, also of Ottawa, in the best-of-five finals in three straight games, 401-274, 455-364, 438-381.
The Canadian National SCRABBLE® Championship, the eighth since its inception in 1996, brought together the top 52 elite SCRABBLE® competitors from across the country. The event took place in the Piccadilly room at The Bond Place Hotel in Toronto between Friday, June 21th and Monday, June 24th .
Along with the title of Canadian Champion and bragging rights and possession of a trophy, participants played for a $5,000 prize as well as a $2,000 donation to the Canadian children's charity of their choice. Logan has designated the Childrens' Hospital of Eastern Ontario Foundation.
"This was one of my favourite championships, with most of the drama coming toward the end of the game." Logan said. "I look forward to representing Canada at Prague in December."
Logan is one of the very top players in the world and was also a three-time past winner of this event, as well as the North American championship. He will be returning to Ottawa this afternoon, but available for interviews for the remainder of the week.
The Canadian National SCRABBLE® Championship was organized by Toronto Scrabble Club Director John Chew (also the co-president of the governing body for competitive SCRABBLE play, the North American SCRABBLE Players Association, NASPA), and sponsored by game manufacturer Hasbro Canada Corporation. NASPA hosted the event's web coverage, including statistics, photographs and interactive games, attracting millions of page hits over the weekend.
