77-acre vineyard and new 20,000-square-foot facility establish Hockley Valley as Ontario's next important winemaking region
TORONTO, July 7, 2015 /CNW/ - Adamo Estate Winery is introducing its first collection of single estate wines made in quintessential Ontario winemaking tradition, in the heart of Hockley Valley. The new winery is the first full-scale winemaking venture to embrace the region's unique terroir and micro-climate conditions.
"We are focused on making Adamo Estate Winery a model for local production in the tradition of established Ontario winemakers," said John Paul, Adamo Estate Winery, Owner. "This is about fruit and origin, taking advantage of the unique characteristics of the region, and most importantly, handcrafting great Ontario wines."
Adamo Estate Winery is a family affair, springing from a decades-long vision held by Mario Adamo. His children, John Paul and Julie, are heading up the winery's operations with Jonas Newman, of Hinterland Wine Company in Prince Edward County, serving as the winery's exclusive Consultant Winemaker. Shauna White, a veteran Okanagan Valley and Niagara grower, joined as Vineyard and Winery Manager over a year ago.
Adamo Estate Winery's first release of single estate wines includes:
Adamo Estate Winery traces its beginnings to a rustic barn on the vineyard property adjacent to the region's celebrated Hockley Valley Resort. Located in the Hills of Headwaters, the Valley is the birthplace of four major Ontario river systems: the Nottawasaga, the Credit, the Humber, and the Grand.
The first 2,000 vines were planted on the property in 2011 and the vineyard has grown steadily each year to its current 23,000 vines on nearly 20 acres. The winery produced 500 cases of wine in 2013 and 5,000 in 2014. This year it's expected to produce more than 7,500 cases, or 60,000 bottles. The winery is using a tailored, integrated barrel program, including custom-made Albrigi tanks from Verona, Italy, and French oak barrels.
The winery is in the midst of construction of a 20,000-square-foot production facility, targeted to be fully functional in time for this year's harvest in late September, with retail slated to open in spring 2016.
Adamo Estate wines are being sold to licensees through B & W Wines, and have already been added to the wine lists at a number of Toronto's finest restaurants including: Ruth's Chris, Sotto Sotto, Archive Wine Bar, Boxcar, Boxcar Social, L'Unità, Capocaccia, Goodlake, Prop and Auberge du Pommier.
Wine lovers will be able to purchase wines direct from the Adamo Estate Winery website starting July 8.
