Renewed program will continue to improve literacy and help people enter the job market.
IQALUIT, Aug. 15, 2018 /CNW/ - Since 2011 the Northern Adult Basic Education Program (NABEP) has provided funding support to Nunavut Arctic College to improve literacy and numeracy skills so working age adults can participate in the labour market. The program's success in improving adult literacy in Nunavut has resulted in a three year extension with the college receiving over $6 million to deliver programming.
The funding was announced today by the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Natural Resources, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and the Minister responsible for CanNor.
From 2011-2017 1,560 students received adult basic education at Nunavut Arctic College; 99% of those were Inuit. These numbers have steadily grown. After completion of the program, many students pursued their education, went into job training programs, or were able to obtain employment in industries such as mining, construction, and tourism.
Funding from CanNor is used to support the delivery of adult basic education programs in Nunavut, as well as develop a culturally appropriate curriculum, professional development opportunities for education, and implement innovative programs.
