TORONTO, May 9, 2018 /CNW/ - Daniel Bernhard, Executive Director and Spokesperson for Friends of Canadian Broadcasting, is available today for comment following the decision by Montreal newspaper, La Presse, to switch to a not-for-profit model.
The switch represents an ominous sign for all of Canadian media. Ottawa needs to act now to address the advertising crisis that has pushed Canadian media and the quality journalism they produce, to the brink.
A loophole in the Income Tax Act encourages up to $5 billion in ad money to leave Canada each year, most of which ends up in the pockets of Google and Facebook, that would otherwise have sustained La Presse and many other media organizations that provide critical reporting which protects our democracy. The federal government needs to close this loophole now.
Friends of Canadian Broadcasting is an independent watchdog for Canadian programming and is not affiliated with any broadcaster or political party.
