AFN Facilitates Dialogue Advancing and Supporting First Nation Governments
OTTAWA, Nov. 9 /CNW/ - First Nations from across Canada met in Montreal this week to further inform and drive the solutions required to address challenges and improve the quality of life of First Nation citizens and communities.
"The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is taking the lead to profile and support First Nation-driven solutions required for our people to fully manage their own affairs, make their own decisions and deliver effective services to their people," said AFN National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo following a two-day forum based on strengthening First Nation governments in ways that respect First Nation rights and empower and enable First Nation citizens, communities and governments.
"We are hearing a clear and consistent message from First Nation leaders - we are taking responsibility and we are leading the way forward," said National Chief Atleo. "Together we are charting a path forward learning from practical experience of the many communities making strides in self-governing capacity. With the confidence and capacity to act and the dedication to implement and sustain change, we can break free from the limitations of the Indian Act and improve the quality of life of our people."
This is the second planning and dialogue forum facilitated by AFN this year. Discussions and outcomes will help inform the AFN Special Chiefs Assembly taking place in Gatineau, QC December 14, 15, 16.
