AFN National Chief Congratulates the Whitecap Dakota First Nation on New
Housing Project
MONTREAL, Nov. 9 /CNW/ - Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo today congratulated the Whitecap Dakota First Nation in Saskatchewan on the announcement of a new affordable housing project that will be built in the community. The announcement of the twelve-unit residential building is the result of a financial commitment by the Whitecap Dakota First Nation and the province of Saskatchewan, marking the first time the province has invested in an affordable housing project at a First Nation. The project was possible because Whitecap Dakota First Nation has its own land use plans and can issue permits under their land code.
"I want to congratulate Chief Darcy Bear, the council and the community at Whitecap Dakota First Nation on this exciting new project," National Chief Atleo stated. "I also commend the province for their participation in this development. This initiative is largely the result of the leadership and citizens of Whitecap Dakota First Nation taking control of their own affairs, making their own land use plans, attracting investment and building their economy. Today's announcement is a testament to the success of that approach. Right now, Whitecap Dakota First Nation has more jobs than residents, showing that strong First Nation economies benefit the surrounding communities and all Canadians. We must all learn from this success and support these efforts that build strong communities and strong First Nations."
The Whitecap Dakota First Nation will invest $750,000 in the project with the Saskatchewan government contributing $1.7 million. The investment by the province and the First Nation levered financing from First Nations Bank of Canada. This project is scheduled to be completed in the Fall of 2011. More residential housing projects are in the works for the community.
The Assembly of First Nations is the national organization representing First Nations communities in Canada.
