EDMONTON, March 1, 2017 /CNW/ - The Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA) presented an Honorary Life Membership to Ms. Midge Landals in conjunction with the ABVMA Annual Member Recognition Banquet at the Delta Calgary South Hotel in Calgary on February 25, 2017.
The ABVMA has the ability provided in the Veterinary Profession Act to make bylaws establishing classes of membership in addition to registered veterinarians, technologists and specialists. The profession can also determine additional categories of membership and prescribe the rights, privileges and obligations of the classes or categories of membership so established.
Consequently, the association has created the category of Honorary Life Membership, which can be granted to members of the association or other persons who have made outstanding contributions to association affairs, or who have made outstanding achievements in the field of veterinary science.
Petitions for Honorary Life Membership are made to Council and must be signed by five members of the association. Recognition is granted upon unanimous approval of such a petition by ABVMA Council. Honorary life members are entitled to certain privileges such as observing Council meetings, attending and participating in Annual General Meetings, receiving minutes of association meetings and sitting on non-legislated committees. Honorary Life Membership does not confer any right to practice or vote in association affairs.
Such memberships are seldom awarded, giving great distinction to those who receive them. Among previous non-veterinary recipients are Ms. Shirley McClellan, Ms. Colleen MacDougall and Ms. Margaret Best.
Ms. Midge Landals served as the Manager of Communications and Professional Enhancement for 15 years from 2001 until May of 2016, when she retired. Midge received Honorary Life Membership for her outstanding dedication and contributions to the association.
