Angus cattle reign at The Royal
TORONTO, Nov. 8, 2016 /CNW/ - Angus cattle are certainly getting noticed at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. The breed swept the Masterfeeds Supreme Beef Championship winning for both the female and bull.
Peter Frijters of Premier Livestock experienced a "three-peat" as his bull, Check Book, took home the banner in 2016. His females took home Masterfeeds Supreme Beef Championship banners in 2015 and 2014. The bull is jointly owned by Premier Livestock, Hasson Livestock, and Clearview Farms.
"It feels good," Frijters says of getting the Supreme banner. "The Royal is the climax of the year in terms of showing and it's also our [Angus] national show this year. It's prestigious to win here." He adds that winning adds value to the cattle and their progeny.
Silver Springs Princess shown by Sandy Reid took the banner as Supreme Beef Female. Owned by RK Cattle Company of Moorefield, ON, Silver Springs Princess earned a number of awards before taking Supreme Champion.
Both Check Book and Silver Springs Princess were named champions in the Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society Challenge Cup.
Judge Ernie Wallace from Missouri was impressed by the caliber of the Angus cattle being shown.
"This is my first time judging in Canada and the quality is as good as what we see in the US," Wallace commented after the competition. "The class was super deep as far as quality goes. It was awesome!"
