TORONTO, Aug. 15, 2012 /CNW/ - Stephen Smith, Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Historica-Dominion Institute, is pleased to announce the appointment of Anthony Wilson-Smith as President. In this role, Anthony will lead the organization, oversee all ongoing operations, and, in collaboration with the Board, provide strategic vision.
For the past seven years, Anthony has held senior executive positions first at a federal Crown Corporation and, more recently, at one of Canada's largest financial institutions. During this time, he has also been active on the not-for-profit front, serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and in the community fund-raising and mental health support sectors. Prior to this, he had a distinguished and award-winning career in journalism as a best-selling author, columnist, foreign correspondent, television and radio commentator and as Editor of one of Canada's largest print publications. During his time in journalism, he worked in all of Canada's provinces and territories as well as reporting from more than 35 countries. A bilingual native Montrealer, he graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Arts (Major in Political Science) and also successfully completed Russian Language studies at The Russian School in Northfield, Vermont.
Anthony succeeds Michael A. Levine, who served as interim leader of the Institute for the past two years. Michael, a lawyer whose work in the entertainment sector has made him one of the country's most prominent figures in that field, has served the Institute with distinction in his time as leader and over many years as an adviser. He will remain active with the Institute in an advisory role.
"As President, Anthony brings enthusiasm, passion for Canada, a wide-ranging knowledge of this country and broad overall experience," said Stephen Smith. "I and my fellow Board Members believe Anthony and the Institute are well-placed to build in future after the significant contributions made by Michael over the last two years as leader."
"I'm grateful to the Board for this opportunity and thrilled by what lies ahead," said Anthony. "As the saying goes, 'the past is prologue': we're better prepared to face the future when we properly understand the forces that have shaped us thus far."
