Appeal for Witnesses in Vehicle Collision Investigation

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Oct. 16 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to an incident that occurred in Waterloo in the early morning hours of October 10, 2009 .

At approximately 1:14 a.m. , officers from Waterloo Regional Police Service attempted to stop a vehicle at Fischer-Hallman Road and Victoria Street . A pursuit ensued, and a short time later, the vehicle struck a tree on Keats Way.

The lead investigator is interested in speaking with the drivers or occupants of a light-coloured car and a taxi cab that are believed to have been in the vicinity at the time of the incident. These individuals, and anyone else that may have information regarding this incident, are asked to call the SIU at 416-622-1935 or 1-800-787-8529 extension No. 1908.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries (including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police. Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to the Attorney General.
