Applications now being accepted for second annual Tom Hanson Photojournalism
Award
TORONTO, Nov. 10 /CNW/ - Applications for the second annual Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award are now being accepted online. They will be accepted from any Canadian photojournalist who has been in the business less than five years - from students to freelancers to photographers working at regional publications - until January 7, 2011. Full details including specifics of the award criteria and application instructions are available at http://cjf-fjc.ca/awards_tomhanson.htm.
Last year's winner, Adrien Veczan, completed a six-week internship with The Canadian Press at their head office in Toronto earlier this year. During his internship he covered news events on the national scene, from day-to-day press conferences, protests and features to high profile events such as the G20. He also covered various sporting events: Blue Jays baseball, CFL football, Toronto FC soccer as well as the Indy car race, Canadian Open golf tournament and the Rogers Cup tennis tournament.
"The Toronto life is vibrant and wide-ranging," says Veczan, a Montreal native, in his internship report. "The spectrum of what a photojournalist may be called to do is infinite. Within hours, I photographed both Queen Elizabeth II attending the Sunday service at church and a million revellers celebrating the gay pride parade."
Veczan is now a regular contributor to the Canadian Press as well as a freelancer for other news outlets in Canada and abroad. His full report, including select images from his experience at The Canadian Press, is online at http://cjf-fjc.ca/awards_tomhanson_2010.htm.
Competition for last year's award was fierce, says Graeme Roy, Director of News Photography at The Canadian Press. This year he expects it to be even more competitive.
"We had an excellent start to the Award last year with an incredibly strong selection of applications. The quality of the submissions was outstanding," he said. "We're hoping to continue to push this forward with an even greater field this year. The Tom Hanson Award is an important opportunity for the winner to perform on the Canadian national stage as well as to have their photos be seen world-wide."
Finalists for the 2011 Tom Hanson Award will be interviewed by the selection committee in January with a winner announced in February, 2011. The award will be presented at the Canadian Journalism Foundation Annual Awards Gala on June 9, 2011.
ABOUT THE TOM HANSON AWARD
The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) and The Canadian Press launched the Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award in 2009 in memory of award-winning photojournalist Tom Hanson. The award offers a six-week paid internship at The Canadian Press head office in Toronto for a photojournalist in the early stages of his or her career. The selection committee is made up of CJF board members, photographers and photo editors from The Canadian Press and daily newspapers and members of Mr. Hanson's family. The winning applicant will complete the internship between April and September, 2011, and be paid a salary equivalent of the start rate for photographers at The Canadian Press.
ABOUT TOM HANSON
Tom Hanson was a swashbuckling photojournalist whose images from the Oka conflict to the cut-and-thrust of the House of Commons told vivid stories. He was an award-winning photographer for The Canadian Press who travelled around the world and across the country, shooting some of the most iconic news and sports images of the last 15 years. When Hanson died suddenly at age 41 in 2009, his family, friends, colleagues at The Canadian Press and the country's photojournalism community wanted to find an appropriate way to honour his memory, talent and spirit. The result was the creation of the Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award.
