TORONTO, Jan. 16, 2017 /CNW/ - Scotiabank, together with Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) and Massey College at the University of Toronto, are excited to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Scotiabank/CJFE Journalism Fellowship for the 2017-18 academic year.
In its sixth year, this program provides an eight-month fellowship to a mid-career journalist from a Latin American country. All journalists with at least five years of experience from South America, Central America, the Caribbean or Mexico are welcome to apply. The successful applicant will spend two semesters in residence at the University of Toronto's Massey College. Previous fellows have been from El Salvador, Mexico, Venezuela, Uruguay and Brazil.
"As Canada's international bank, we appreciate the value of individuals of diverse backgrounds coming together to share their perspectives and talents, which is why we are proud to support the Scotiabank/CJFE Journalism Fellowship," said Diane Flanagan, Vice President, Corporate Communications at Scotiabank. "With the current challenges faced by journalists and media outlets around the world, these collaborative opportunities are becoming even more important."
"Massey College is honoured to be hosting the2017 - 2018 CJFE / Scotiabank Journalism Fellowship," said Hugh Segal, Master of Massey College. "The Journalism fellowships housed at Massey College are an important part of our college history as well as our interdisciplinary mandate. This is a unique opportunity for Journalists from the Caribbean as well as South, Central and Latin American to gain a better understanding of the Canadian media landscape and have the unique opportunity of connecting and working with the top academic minds across all disciplines from the University of Toronto. We'd like to thank CJFE and Scotiabank for their continued support of this important program and we encourage all those interested to apply."
"This Fellowship is an important opportunity for journalists from South America and the Caribbean to engage with Canadian media workers," said CJFE Executive Director Tom Henheffer. "It's a rare chance for media workers from different continents to learn about one another's cultures, journalistic challenges and best practices. In a shrinking world, fostering these cross-border exchanges is increasingly important, helping to create a stronger public dialogue in Canada and abroad."
Run in coordination with the Canadian Journalism Fellowships at Massey College, the Scotiabank/CJFE Journalism Fellow has the opportunity to broaden his or her professional, academic and journalistic skills by attending courses at the University of Toronto. The Fellowship also facilitates the development of new connections with the Canadian media, and expands the Fellow's knowledge and expertise that can be applied upon return to his or her home country.
The deadline for applications to the 2017-18 Fellowship is February 20, 2017.

Massey College is a graduate students' residential community affiliated with, but independent from, the University of Toronto. The College buildings, designed by celebrated architect Ron Thom, were constructed in 1962 and are centrally located on the University of Toronto campus, near public transportation. Five residences are arranged around a central quadrangle. The College offers much more than a residence; it provides a unique, congenial and intellectual environment for graduate students of distinguished ability in all disciplines to share in a rich and stimulating community. In addition to the students affiliated with the College, who are known as Junior Fellows, other members of the community include distinguished senior scholars and eminent members of society beyond the academic world. Relationships among all members of the community are encouraged and fostered by a variety of College events and programs, including High Table dinners held biweekly throughout the academic year. A College choir, sports teams, chapel services and numerous social events all contribute to our warm and vibrant community.
