OTTAWA, May 1, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, today announced the appointment of Ms. Joanne Whittle to the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) as director for a three-year term.
"I am very pleased that Ms. Whittle has accepted this position," said Minister Lebel. "CATSA will benefit from her considerable leadership experience and track record in human resources management."
Ms. Whittle, who was the successful recipient of the Ottawa Citizen's "HR Professional of the Year" award in 2004, has over 15 years of experience in private sector human resources management. Since 1997, she has held numerous management positions, including manager, director, and chair of the board of directors of various organizations. In 2009, she was appointed a community member of the Canada Pension Plan Appeals Tribunal, where she interpreted and applied complex legislation to review decisions for disability pensions. Ms. Whittle holds a bachelor of arts from Memorial University in Newfoundland and is a graduate of the Advanced Program in HR Management from the University of Toronto.
Ms. Whittle's volunteer involvement includes teaching comprehensive HR courses to entrepreneurs with Epix and sitting on the Professional Development Subcommittee of the Human Resources Professional Association of Ontario.
CATSA, established on April 1, 2002, is a federal Crown corporation. It is responsible for the screening of passengers and their belongings, and screening of non-passengers entering airport restricted areas, as well as any items in their possession. CATSA and Transport Canada work together in aviation security, each with very distinct mandates. CATSA screens 52 million passengers and 62 million pieces of checked baggage each year.
