Are You Underpaid? Survey Released With Robert Half 2019 Salary Guides Finds 47 Per Cent Of Canadian Workers Feel Shortchanged
TORONTO, Aug. 28, 2018 /CNW/ - There's good news and bad news when it comes to how satisfied Canadian workers are with their compensation. The good: 51 per cent of professionals surveyed by global staffing firm Robert Half feel they are paid fairly at their jobs. The bad: 47 per cent feel underpaid. The remaining two per cent admitted to feeling overpaid.
More than 550 workers in professional environments in Canada were surveyed for the study. The research was issued in conjunction with the release of the 2019 Robert Half Salary Guides, which provide starting salary ranges for 400 roles in the accounting and finance, technology, legal, creative, and administrative fields.
Workers were asked, "In your current job, do you think you are…?"

Issues, like failing to benchmark salaries and understand local pay rates, can fuel employees' feelings of being under-compensated. Word of mouth is often another factor. Workers who have spoken with recruiters about new opportunities, or with friends who have recently changed roles, may hear about better pay and perks offered elsewhere.
"As competition for skilled workers intensifies, companies are under more pressure to keep pace with hiring demands and shifting candidate expectations," said Greg Scileppi, president of Robert Half, International Staffing Operations. "To engage top talent, it is imperative that employers stay in touch with local salary and workplace trends. Flexible compensation packages that incorporate the benefits, perks and incentives that professionals value most are key to attracting highly capable workers and building the strong teams companies need to support evolving business needs."
About the Salary Guides
Robert Half has reported on salaries yearly since 1950. The company gathers information from its specialized recruiters throughout its Canadian offices to compile the Salary Guides. Information in the guides is based on the thousands of job searches, negotiations and placements managed by Robert Half's staffing and recruiting managers. Continuing or ongoing salaries are not reported because many external factors — such as seniority, work ethic, job performance and training — impact the salaries of full-time professionals as work histories develop.
