TORONTO, Oct. 11, 2016 /CNW/ - Ari Kaplan has launched Kaplan Law (kaplanlaw.ca), Canada's first law firm focusing on pension dispute mediation.
In his two decades at Koskie Minsky, Ari became known as one of Canada's top pension practitioners. He has been counsel or co-counsel on some of the country's most significant pension cases, including appearances at the Supreme Court of Canada and the Nortel insolvency allocation hearings. Ari is the co-author of the leading text on Canadian pension law and is peer-ranked in Chambers, Lexpert and Best Lawyers.
Ari mediates commercial, workplace and family disputes involving pension and benefit law issues. In 2014, he facilitated a $140 million workplace settlement as an independent pension law expert. In 2015, he became Canada's first Qualified Mediator (Q.Med.) with recognized expertise in pension law and established Mediation Benefits (mediationbenefits.co), an arm of Kaplan Law.
Pensions are a prism through which we understand aging, labour, family and economy. Six million Canadians participate in a workplace pension plan, both in the private sector and broader public sector, in all industries and levels of government. Pension plans cover 37% of the workforce and are an important pillar of the Canadian retirement system, especially as the number of Canadians over age 65 doubles in the next 20 years. Some $60 billion dollars is contributed yearly by Canadian employers and employees to pension funds managing $1.5 trillion in assets.
The competing interests of employers, employees and pensioners can foster disagreements between them and their stakeholders and families. The complexity of pension law and its impact on operations and individual lives makes mediation a meaningful alternative to the uncertainty and increased cost that litigation foments.
Kaplan Law is dedicated to modern law service, organized as an independent law practice at Law Chambers, 393 University Avenue, Toronto.
Clients interface with Kaplan Law using the RPR model (Retain, Partner, Refer):
