Arrest made in York University food court incident
TORONTO, March 14, 2014 /CNW/ - York University strongly welcomes the news that Toronto Police Service has charged a suspect in the March 6 incident in the food court on our Keele campus, in which a firearm was discharged and two students were injured. The arrest was announced late this morning in a Toronto Police Service media release.
York Security Services is cooperating with Toronto Police Services in their investigation.
President Mamdouh Shoukri announced immediately after the incident that the following actions are being undertaken: York senior officials continue to be in close contact with TPS to assist in the investigation and will be meeting with the Police to review the incident and to provide joint recommendations to enhance campus safety and security; York Security Services has posted dedicated security staff on site in the Food Court at the Student Centre; and discussions are being held with the Student Centre about augmenting security in and around the Student Centre with video cameras.
These measures are in addition to the substantial measures taken by York University to improve safety on campus in the last few years.
York University would like to thank the Toronto Police Service for their quick response to this disturbing incident. As this is an active police investigation, we would ask media to contact police for any comment.
