MONTREAL, June 5, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The media are invited to attend the Arturo Prat Award Ceremony, which will take place at Pier 21 at the Port of Quebec on Friday, June 7, at 1:30 pm.
For the third year, this award is being presented to the top student on the Coastal Operations Course (Phase III) at the Canadian Forces Fleet School Québec. It recognizes leadership skills, seamanship and strength of character, which were values embodied by the Chilean naval hero Arturo Prat.
WHEN: Friday, June 7, at 1:30 pm
WHERE: Pier 21 at the Port of Quebec (near HMCS Montcalm, at 170 Dalhousie Street, Quebec City)
WHAT: A military parade during which the Chilean Defence Attaché in Canada, Captain Ramiro Navajas, will present the trophy to the winner in the presence of Captain (Navy) Jill Marrack, Deputy Commander of the Naval Reserve of Canada.
The Arturo Prat Award is given in memory of Chilean hero Commander Arturo Prat. The commander of the Esméralda, an 868-ton wooden corvette, lost his life on May 21, 1879, at Iquique, Chile, in a famous battle between the Esméralda and the Peruvian 1,200-ton armoured turret ship Huáscar. With the Esméralda's mobility reduced by fire from the port of Iquique and the Huáscar, Commander Prat surprised the Peruvians by ordering his decimated crew to storm the Huáscar.
The Arturo Prat Award is a strong symbol of the close friendship that has developed between the Naval Reserve and the Chilean community.
