Arup Chosen as Prime Consultant for New Calgary Cancer Centre
TORONTO, March 19, 2014 /CNW/ - Arup, an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists, with a reputation for delivering innovative and sustainable designs, announced today that it is providing full multi-disciplinary technical advisory services to the Government of Alberta for the new Calgary Cancer Centre located on the Foothills Medical Centre site. The new cancer centre will provide people living in Calgary and southern Alberta with better access to leading edge cancer care.
As the prime consultant for the technical advisory team, Arup will provide expertise on all disciplines of engineering, master planning, architecture, traffic and transport, IT, medical equipment, and technical specialties. The project will include a new outpatient facility, an inpatient facility, research space, a bone marrow transplant unit and advanced diagnostics and treatment incorporating radiation therapy. Construction of the 80 - 90,000m2 facility is anticipated to commence early in 2016.
"This will be a challenging and exciting project for us and we are looking forward to successfully collaborating with all parties involved to develop a new comprehensive cancer care centre that will bring long lasting benefits to patients, their families and the wider community," said Katie Wood, Arup project director.
Both traditional build and Public-Private-Partnership (P3) options are being reviewed for the procurement of the new cancer centre. Whichever option is chosen will be done with the best value for taxpayer dollars in mind.
Arup's technical advisory team is comprised of local staff from Calgary, healthcare experts from across the Americas including Toronto, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and specialist team members from the United Kingdom.
