ASC announces appointment of three new commission members
CALGARY, March 19, 2012 /CNW/ - The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is pleased to announce the Lieutenant Governor in Council has appointed Terry Allen, Webster Macdonald and Maureen McCaw as members of the ASC, each for a three-year term. They bring a combined wealth of experience and knowledge from the business, finance and legal professions that will serve the ASC well in the undertaking of its responsibility to ensure confidence in the integrity of Alberta's capital market and protect investors.
Terry Allen, CFA, ICD.D is the President of Pivotal Capital Advisory Group, a business she established in 2002 to provide project and corporate finance advice and to raise capital for clients. She previously served as Senior Vice-President and Director of PricewaterhouseCoopers in Calgary, Manager, Corporate and Investment Banking Group for TD Bank, and Senior Account Manager, Oil and Gas Group at CIBC. Ms. Allen has been a director on a number of corporate and not-for profit boards and is presently a member of Prasino Capital Management's advisory board, the Dean's Advisory board for the University of Calgary's Faculty of Medicine, the CEO Advisory Circle for the University of Regina's Paul J. Hill School of Business, and the Salvation Army Advisory Board in Calgary. Ms. Allen's educational background is in business administration.
Webster (Web) Macdonald Q.C. has more than 40 years of experience in the legal profession and has practiced extensively in the field of litigation. He is a recently retired partner of Blake, Cassels & Graydon law firm in Calgary and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Mr. Macdonald has served as a bencher of The Law Society of Alberta, President of the Calgary Bar Association, Chairman of the Calgary Police Commission, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Glenbow Museum. Mr. Macdonald has been admitted to the bars of the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta.
Maureen McCaw is the former Executive Vice-President for Alberta of Leger Marketing Research, a business she founded as Criterion Research Corp. in 1986. She is currently a director of Suncor Energy, the Edmonton Regional Airports Authority and sits on the advisory board for Leger Marketing. Ms. McCaw is also a board member of the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, The Nature Conservancy and Women Building Futures. She has held director positions with Petro-Canada, EBA Engineering, Citadel Theatre and served as the Chair of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. Ms. McCaw's educational background is in economics.
The ASC also recognizes with gratitude the valued service of Allan Edgeworth, Beverley Brennan, Jack Major, Neil Murphy and Karen Prentice, who will retire from the ASC March 31, 2012 upon the expiry of their terms.
Members of the ASC act as the board of directors for the organization, functioning as adjudicators of applications, disputes and enforcement proceedings before the Commission. They also approve recommendations for new or revised rules and policies applicable to the Alberta capital market.
The ASC is the regulatory agency responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted to foster a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and to protect investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.
