ASC announces appointment of three new commission members
CALGARY, April 16, 2013 /CNW/ - The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is pleased to announce that the Lieutenant Governor in Council has appointed Bradley Nemetz, Ann Rooney and Dr. Ian Beddis as members of the ASC, each for a three-year term. They bring a combined wealth of experience and knowledge from the accounting, finance and legal professions.
Bradley Nemetz, Q.C. is a partner in the litigation department at Bennett Jones LLP. Mr. Nemetz has served as a bencher of The Law Society of Alberta and has also chaired a number of Law Society committees and taskforces including the Conduct Committee, Finance Committee, Audit Committee, Professional Committee, Third-Party Funding Taskforce and Trust Funds Taskforce. Mr. Nemetz is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2002.
Ann Rooney, FCA, ICD.D has 25 years experience in the accounting profession and became a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants of Alberta in 1996. She is a past president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta and has served on many of the provincial and national committees involved in the governance of the profession. Ms. Rooney has been a director on a number of corporate and not-for profit boards and is presently a director of Parkbridge Lifestyle Communities, Blackbridge, Horizon North Logistics Inc, and the Nature Conservancy of Canada. In addition to her education in accounting, Ms. Rooney also has a Masters in Environmental Science.
Dr. Ian Beddis has more than 37 years of experience working in the financial services field. Dr. Beddis has sat on numerous boards and is currently Co-Chairman of the Brock University Presidents Advisory Board and sits as a board member for the Strathcona Tweedsmuir School Foundation, the Theatre Calgary Foundation and the Carthy Foundation. In addition to his Masters in Economics, Dr. Beddis received an honorary doctorate from Brock University in 2000.
The ASC also recognizes with gratitude the valued service of Rod McKay, Ken Potter and Glen Roane, each having served two three-year terms with the ASC, which terms expired on March 31, 2013.
Members of the ASC act as the board of directors for the organization, functioning as adjudicators of applications, disputes and enforcement proceedings before the Commission. They also approve recommendations for new or revised rules and policies applicable to the Alberta capital market.
The ASC is the regulatory agency responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted to foster a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and to protect investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.
