ASC announces appointments of new commission member, lead independent member
CALGARY, July 11, 2016 /CNW/ - The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is pleased to announce that the Lieutenant Governor in Council has appointed Maryse Saint-Laurent, ICD.D, as a member of the ASC for a three-year term commencing July 7, 2016.
Ms. Saint-Laurent possesses more than 20 years of experience in the legal profession and is currently a consultant providing board advisory services on matters such as corporate governance, risk management and compliance program development. Prior, Ms. Saint-Laurent was the vice-president, legal and corporate secretary of TransAlta Corporation where she led the team that completed the successful initial public offering of TransAlta Renewables. Earlier in her career, she was senior legal counsel for TransCanada Corporation and general counsel and corporate secretary for TC Pipelines, a U.S. limited partnership. Ms. Saint-Laurent holds an LL.M. (securities and finance) from York University's Osgoode Hall law school and the Institute of Corporate Directors designation. She is presently a board director of Western Sky Land Trust and the Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre.
Dr. Ian Beddis, Brad Nemetz, Q.C., and Ann Rooney, FCA, ICD.D have been re-appointed as members of the ASC, each for a three-year term. Ms. Rooney has also been named lead independent member, a position that is appointed annually.
The ASC recognizes with gratitude the valued service of Daniel McKinley, FCA, ICD.D, whose three-year term with the ASC expired on March 31, 2016.
Members of the ASC act as the board of directors for the organization, functioning as adjudicators of applications, disputes and enforcement proceedings before the Commission. They also approve recommendations for new or revised rules and policies applicable to the Alberta capital market.
The ASC is the regulatory agency responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.
