Assembly of First Nations National Chief and Alberta First Nations Leadership meet with Alberta Government to press forward Treaty implementation, fairness and economic opportunity

OTTAWA, Feb. 27, 2013 /CNW/ - Today, AFN National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo and AFN Alberta Regional Chief Cameron Alexis joined First Nations leaders from Treaties 6, 7 and 8 in Alberta in meeting with Alberta Premier Allison Redford, as well as provincial Minister of Aboriginal Relations Robin Campbell and Minister of Education Jeff Johnson.

The Treaty leadership continues to push the province to strengthen and improve the relationship on a government to government basis to see the full implementation and enforcement of the Treaties.

"The Treaties are about nurturing and building the relationship and that's why these discussions are so critical. This means ongoing dialogue and partnership at the highest levels," said AFN Alberta Regional Chief Cameron Alexis.

The Alberta Treaty leadership pressured for immediate action in priority areas, which Alberta Premier Redford agreed to. Premier Redford also expressed her government's commitment and respect for the sacred Treaties.

This means finding ways to share in the wealth and economic opportunities for First Nations citizens. This also means investments and partnerships in education for First Nations children and youth that fully supports and respects First Nation history, language and culture.

Today's meeting provides an opportunity to demonstrate not just leadership for this region, but for all First Nations and Canadians across the country," said AFN National Chief Atleo. "Through respect and honouring commitments, Treaty and rights as well as our shared responsibilities - we can achieve meaningful change in the lives of our peoples and advance sustainable economic opportunity for all."
