Association Welcomes Return of Board Control to Trustees

TORONTO, Nov. 28, 2013 /CNW/ - "In our education system it is the publicly elected school trustee who represents the interests and aspirations of parents. That is an important and integral role in public education which is why today the Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association welcomes the news that the order vesting the supervision of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board has been revoked by the Minister of Education. The school board's duly elected trustees can now resume the responsibilities they were elected to fulfill," said Marino Gazzola, President of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association.

Since 2012, the Windsor-Essex CDSB has been under supervision to address a financial deficit at the board. On Monday, November 25 it was reported that the Windsor-Essex CDSB had actually achieved a $5.4 million surplus for the 2012-13 year.

The Association applauds the Windsor-Essex CDSB on successfully achieving this goal while working collaboratively and effectively in challenging circumstances to not only meet but to exceed expectations.

"Among the most important aspects of public education in this province is the strong connection that our school boards have to the community and specifically the parents who entrust their children to our schools. I am pleased that the Windsor-Essex CDSB Trustees can now resume their role as duly elected school board trustees able to make decisions that directly reflect the needs and expectations of parents and students in our Catholic schools," said Mr. Gazzola.

The Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association is the provincial voice for Catholic education. Founded in 1930, OCSTA represents all English Catholic school boards and collectively educates approximately 600,000 students in Ontario, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12.
