Autism workers to stage information picket today
TORONTO, Oct 4 /CNW/ - Workers at the Geneva Centre for Autism will stage an information picket today to protest their employer's threat to close down the facility during the Christmas-New Year's holidays, causing layoffs for more than 75 staff members
Staff at the Centre, represented by OPSEU local 548, voted 98 per cent in favour of strike action after they learned in August that the employer had planned a 14-day temporary layoff. The employer was challenged at the Ontario Labour Relations Board to make a financial disclosure. Upon receiving this request the employer reduced the lay offs from 14 to five days.
The layoffs are planned despite the fact the two sides are currently in contract negotiations.
Today's information picket will start at 4:30 p.m. outside the Geneva Centre for Autism, 112 Merton St., Toronto.
Geneva Centre for Autism is an international leader in the development and delivery of clinical services for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
