MONTRÉAL, Feb. 4, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - The Association for the Voice of Education in Québec (AVEQ) is opposed to all tuition fee increases, irrespective of the origin or status of students. "This government is placing yet another financial burden on the shoulders of people living in precarity for no other reason than to reduce taxes for the wealthy," stated Isaac Stethem, Communication Coordinator for AVEQ.
"By permitting universities to hike tuition fees for international students to compensate for the cuts institutions are facing, the Liberal government is play carrot-and-stick politics, and once again, students have to pay for the carrot," according to Marjorie Cyr-Beaudin, Internal Coordinator for AVEQ.
AVEQ condemns a funding model that inherently worsens the funding imbalance between anglophone and francophone universities, as well as between urban and regional institutions. In the face of this divisive political tactic, AVEQ stands firm in its belief that the solution to the underfunding of the university system is public re-investment. Therefore, it calls on all student and labour organisations in the education sector to stand together to defend accessible higher education, and applauds the efforts already underway.
AVEQ's mission is to defend both Anglophone and francophone students, with particular attention to the realities of students in the regions.
