LONGUEUIL, QC, May 18 /CNW Telbec/ - Azimut Exploration Inc. ("Azimut") reports that it has staked a large gold, copper and rare earth element exploration target in Nunavik, Quebec. This area, now forming the Rex South property, displays a strong exploration potential based on the combination of the following factors:
- An extensive multi-element geochemical footprint in lake-bottom sediments, - A geophysical signature indicating a major structural boundary, and - The presence of several mineralized prospects with high-grade gold (up to 33 g/t Au) and copper (up to 6.4% Cu).
The Rex South property, acquired through map staking, is 42 km long by 15 to 20 km wide, and comprises three (3) distinct claim blocks totalling 1,274 claims over a surface area of 555 km2. Confirmation of claim registration from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Wildlife of Quebec is pending for 560 of these claims. A group of claims, which was originally part of another major Azimut property, the Rex property, is now part of the Rex South property. This group of claims hosts eight (8) mineralized prospects previously reported as part of Area 2 in the press release dated December 4, 2009. The Rex South property is located about 145 km southeast of the community of Povungnituk.
The lake-bottom sediment geochemical footprint and the geophysical signature outline two main prospective domains for exploration:
- A 35-km-long arsenic-antimony-(gold) anomaly that correlates well with a NW-SE-trending regional-scale boundary between a high magnetic domain and a low magnetic domain; - Strong copper, copper-molybdenum and rare earth element anomalies that mainly correlate with the regional-scale low magnetic domain in the northeastern part of the property.
Azimut's analysis of the geochemical targets relative to the location of known mineralized prospects suggests that the property could have substantial undiscovered potential. Exploration models are primarily large sediment-hosted gold deposits and intrusion-hosted disseminated polymetallic deposits. Rex South is located in the Archean Minto Subprovince. The main rock types on the property are volcano-sedimentary and intrusive units. Metamorphic grade likely reaches upper amphibolite facies.
This press release was prepared by geologist Jean-Marc Lulin acting as Azimut's Qualified Person under NI 43-101. Azimut is a mineral exploration company using cutting-edge targeting methodologies with the objective of discovering major ore deposits.
