More than $970,000 from the Government of Canada will support eight projects
KELOWNA, BC, Aug. 17, 2017 /CNW/ - Communities in the BC Interior will benefit from safer, more reliable infrastructure as a result of more than $970,000 from the Government of Canada for eight projects.
The funding was announced today by the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation,
Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada.
Funding for the eight projects will provide upgrades to sports fields, recreation centres and community halls. The funding was announced at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus, where the federal investment will be used to upgrade and repurpose an existing recreation field.
This investment is being allocated under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, a $300-million fund that was established to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary of Confederation through investments in the community spaces that bring Canadians together. Of that amount, up to $92.4 million is being invested across Western Canada.
Quotes
"These investments are community-building projects to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary. And there's no better way to mark this milestone than to celebrate the places that bring us together – the places that allow us to stay fit, unwind and connect with our friends and neighbours. That's how we establish the bonds of common understanding and friendship in a country where people come from every corner of the world. The values of openness, diversity and inclusion that define all Canadians are forged in our community spaces."
- The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada
"Strong communities are built on strong, modern infrastructure. This funding is delivering on that idea, and, at the same time, focusing on the very facilities that bring communities together – sports fields, community halls and recreation centres."
- The Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities
"The enhancements to the Commons, at the heart of UBC Okanagan, will have a significant positive impact on student life and make the field more versatile for community recreation. Thank you to the Government of Canada for this important infrastructure investment."
- Deborah Buszard, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal, UBC's Okanagan campus
