Certification for Environmentally Responsible Design, Construction and
Operations
Location is BD's First to Earn Gold in LEED Green Building Rating System </pre> <p>FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J., <span class="xn-chron">Dec. 2, 2010</span> /CNW/ -- BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE: BDX), a leading global medical technology company, today announced that its new BD - <span class="xn-location">Canada</span> corporate office in Mississauga received Gold Certification from the <span class="xn-location">Canada</span> Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating System. BD's office in Mississauga is the Company's first of four LEED-certified locations to achieve LEED Gold. LEED certification is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to work.</p> <p/> <p>"We are pleased that the BD - <span class="xn-location">Canada</span> office achieved this designation and became the first BD facility to be LEED Gold Certified," said <span class="xn-person">Mike Oliver</span>, Country General Manager, BD - <span class="xn-location">Canada</span>. "This recognition affirms our corporate commitment to sustainability as well as our goal of becoming the most environmentally responsible company in the medical technology industry."</p> <p/> <p>BD earned LEED Gold certification in the Commercial Interiors category for its 70,000-square-foot offices, which are located within a building that has achieved LEED Gold for Core and Shell categories. The space is projected to use 30% less energy and 30% less water than a comparable space that does not utilize the environmental strategies implemented in the BD - <span class="xn-location">Canada</span> office. BD achieved points to qualify for LEED Gold Certification through recycling of construction materials, energy efficiency, occupant comfort, ergonomics and green housekeeping. The building also earned points for reducing water through automatic restrooms; storing and collecting recyclables; and using low-emitting materials such as paints and carpeting.</p> <p/> <p>"BD strongly believes in balancing the triple bottom line of achieving strong economic performance, promoting environmental stewardship and advancing social responsibility," said Glenn Barbi, Vice President, BD Office of Global Sustainability.
