BDO Canada Hosts Second Annual Connecting with Venture Capitalists Day
TORONTO, Feb. 1, 2017 /CNW/ - For the second year in a row, BDO Canada LLP will be hosting their Connecting with Venture Capitalists event. With a mission to drive growth and innovation in the technology sector, the event provides entrepreneurs and startups from across Canada the chance to pitch to a panel of venture capitalists from a number of notable firms including 500 Startup, Brightspark, Mistral Venture Partners, OMERS, Real Ventures, and Whitecap.
BDO has been working closely with clients in the technology sector for a number of years and have gained an in-depth understanding of the challenges and difficulties facing the industry. Access to capital is considered a top risk facing tech companies, illustrating the importance of events like VC Day, which provide opportunities for companies to secure financing and establish solid, sustainable businesses.
Individuals or businesses wishing to pitch to the panel can submit an application for one of the following Connecting with Venture Capitalists events:
March 7, 2017 – Toronto, Ontario - The Vault, 250 University Ave.
Application deadline February 14, 2017.
March 29, 2017 – Halifax, Nova Scotia - Four Points by Sheraton Halifax, 1496 Hollis St.
Application deadline March 8, 2017.
Why BDO Supports the Tech Sector
The tech industry is a major economic driver in Canada and will continue to grow in importance. Currently, the sector contributes 17% to Canada's GDP and employs more than 854,000 Canadians, constituting 5.6% of the nation's total employment. The province of Ontario alone contains one of the highest concentrations of tech firms outside of Silicon Valley, and in order to ensure Canada's tech sector continues to grow and diversify, investment and long-term strategic planning must remain a priority.
"Canada has established itself as an attractive home for tech. We're hearing more investors today talk about future growth plans for their tech businesses, whereas a few years ago, exit strategies were the big focus," said Peter Matutat, leader of BDO Canada's Technology & Life Science practice. "The Canadian tech scene is well poised to capitalize on the major trends shaping the market in the coming years, from the Internet of Things to augmented reality."
