Be the charge for patients in need this long weekend
OTTAWA, May 14, 2015 /CNW/ - As people begin to make plans to celebrate the long weekend, Canadian Blood Services is asking Canadians to be the charge for patients in need by making an appointment to donate blood within the next two weeks.
The need for blood donations never takes a holiday, but with people away or busy with other activities, there tends to be fewer blood donations during the long weekend.
"For hospital patients undergoing treatment, blood or blood products can be like electricity. It provides them with the charge they need so that they can continue to spend time with their family and friends", says Pamela Mullins, Director of Donor Relations. "Long weekends put added pressure on maintaining Canada's blood supply; that's why we are asking Canadians to make an appointment before, during or after the long weekend."
The need for blood is constant. This is especially true for patients in Canada that have conditions that require regular blood transfusions, such as patients with cancer or blood disorders.
The Ottawa blood donor clinic at 1575 Carling Ave. will be open this long weekend on Saturday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Monday, May 18, from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
To book an appointment, and help be the charge, use the GiveBlood App or visit www.blood.ca. Bring a friend or family member to donate with you and double the charge. Those with appointments already are encouraged to keep their appointments.
