Bed Bug Services Donated During Peak Season
Experts Predict This Year's Peak Bed Bug Season To Be More Challenging
TORONTO, June 26, 2014 /CNW/ - In an effort to curb infestations during this year's peak bed bug season, Abell Pest Control is donating $90 thousand in bed bug exterminations for people in need across Canada.
"We know that cost is a factor for far too many Canadians suffering from bed bugs," said John Abell, President of Abell Pest Control. "We're celebrating the 90th anniversary of our family business by giving back to communities in a way that can help make a real difference in people's lives, especially during peak season."
While bed bugs thrive year round, June to October is traditionally prime season for bed bugs, as heat and humidity increases their reproductive cycle. A few bed bugs can multiply into more than 1,000 in just over two months. As school ends and the busy travel season begins, bed bugs become hitchhikers, easily traveling in personal belongs and luggage.
So far this year, there has already been a 20 percent increase in bed bug inquires at Abell compared to the same period last year, with most calls from major cities including Toronto and the GTA, Winnipeg, Montreal, Halifax, Calgary and Vancouver.
A COMPAS Research survey of Canadian Health Inspectors, on behalf of Abell Pest Control, shows that reports of bed bug infestations have risen anywhere from 20 to 50 percent over the past three years, with an average annual increase of 8 per cent.
"As bed bug infestations steadily rise, we have every reason to believe that this year's peak season will be one of the most challenging," added Abell. "While we may not win the battle against bed bugs over the coming months, our goal is to help ease the suffering."
Abell will donate approximately 230 bed bug exterminations to residents in communities across Canada, based on referrals from local facility managers and health inspectors. Bed bug training will also be offered at no cost to landlords and building managers to help prevent infestations through greater awareness.
