Best Buy Canada and BC Hockey award $20,000 in grants to BC minor hockey teams

Each of the 10 teams chosen receive a $2,000 grant

BURNABY, BC, Dec. 13, 2012 /CNW/ - Best Buy Canada and BC Hockey are excited to announce the 10 BC minor hockey teams that will each receive a $2,000 grant from Best Buy's All Star Grants contest. Cheque presentations will be made for most of the winning teams - media are welcome to attend for photo opportunities and interviews with the teams.

After weeks of public voting, a judging panel selected these 10 winners:

5.	TriCities Predators Bantam C2								Coquitlam

8.	Victoria JDf Bantam T4								Victoria
9.	Prince George Predators								Prince George
10.	Coquitlam Raptors H4-C5								Coquitlam

To participate in Best Buy's All Star Grants contest, BC Minor Hockey teams were asked to submit an entry which included a photo, a video, a description of the team and an overview of how the grant would be used. The teams could then share their entry with as many friends and family as possible and encourage them to vote every day to increase the team's chances of winning.

The 10 winning teams were chosen from the top 20 finalists after public voting. The judging panel also considered need, effort and creativity when selecting the final winners. The 10 runner-up teams each receive a Vancouver Canucks jersey and a $250 Best Buy gift card to use for fundraising.

The All Star Grants contest was developed by Best Buy Canada to run as part of the company's sponsorship of the Vancouver Canucks. "We wanted to make sure that we moved forward with this plan to support hockey at the grassroots level," says Best Buy Marketing Manager Mary Ann Mckenzie "We were very impressed with the level of excitement and commitment all the teams put into the program."

Nearly 300 teams participated in the overall contest, with the top team receiving more than 10,000 public votes in the process.
