Better Care Starts Here, Ontario Nurses Celebrate Nursing Week
TORONTO, May 3, 2018 /CNW/ - With the theme 'Better Care Starts Here,' the Ontario Nurses' Association's (ONA) 65,000 registered nurses, nurse practitioners and registered practical nurses will celebrate their profession during Nursing Week 2018.
Scheduled for May 7 to 13, ONA members' Nursing Week theme reflects nurses' unique, highly developed skills and the high-quality care they provide to Ontarians.
"Nursing Week is a much-needed pause during the year, when we put aside the challenges and serious issues facing the nursing profession to celebrate our skills, education and knowledge," said ONA President Vicki McKenna, RN. "Nurses know that we are the backbone of our health-care system - as do our patients," she adds. "We know that better care starts with nurses - in every sector of health care - and that is truly something to celebrate."
Nursing Week coincides with the May 12 birthday of Florence Nightingale - considered by many to be the pioneer of modern nursing. ONA members in every sector of health care will be holding events to mark this important week for the profession.
Members of ONA's Board of Directors, including McKenna and First Vice-President Cathryn Hoy, RN, will be travelling the province to celebrate at selected member events, conduct site visits and celebrate the vital profession of nursing.
"This week we will celebrate our profession and our compassion, setting aside the challenges brought by RN cuts, heavy workloads, increasing workplace violence and other issues," said McKenna.
Members of the media should watch for media advisories in their communities as ONA representatives visit members.
ONA is the union representing 65,000 registered nurses, nurse practitioners, registered practical nurses and health-care professionals, as well as almost 16,000 nursing student affiliates, providing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, clinics and industry.
