Habitat for Humanity joins forces with The Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation to build a new dream for hundreds of children in need
TORONTO, Nov. 16, 2015 /CNW/ - For some families in need, the pursuit of higher learning may feel like an elusive dream. The truth is; it can be a reality.
That's why Habitat for Humanity GTA (Habitat GTA) and CST Consultants Inc. (CST) are joining forces to help families in need build the dream of post-secondary education by raising awareness of the Canada Learning Bond (CLB).
The CLB is offered by the Government of Canada to help eligible families save up to $2000 for their children's education after high school. The CLB adds $500 to a child's RESP in the first year, then $100 more each year their family qualifies until the child turns age 15.
"We are thrilled about this enhanced partnership with CST", said Ene Underwood, CEO, Habitat GTA. "This partnership is a natural evolution for Habitat to help break the cycle of poverty for the more than 200 families we work with. "
"The majority of families are unaware that this government funding is available", said Sherry MacDonald, CST President and CEO. "The latest numbers show 68 per cent of eligible families have not received the CLB they are entitled to. We believe it's because they don't know about it. This money could go a long way in helping children realize the dream of college, university or other educational programs."
Teams will be reaching out to Habitat GTA families in a series of presentations during National Education Savings Week, from November 15 to 21, 2015.
Reporters interested in speaking with CST or Habitat for a story about this new initiative, are invited to contact Jennifer Palisoc, CST Corporate Communications.
