Big changes to the beer landscape in Ontario
New beer retailing model to benefit consumers, licensees and smaller brewers
TORONTO, April 20, 2015 /CNW/ - Moosehead Breweries supports the Ontario government's planned changes to the distribution and retailing of beer in the province.
"We believe the changes will have a positive impact on consumers and licensees, as well as smaller independent brewers like ourselves," says Patrick Oland, Chief Financial Officer.
The changes flow directly from recommendations made by the Premier's Advisory Council on Government Assets. The Council's April 16th report, entitled Modernizing Beer Retailing and Distribution in Ontario, makes several recommendations, including:
- the introduction of beer sales at large grocery stores
- improved merchandising at The Beer Store
- price reductions for licensees purchasing fewer than 250 cases per year
"The changes mean Ontario's beer consumers will be exposed to a wider variety of brands, and will enjoy improved convenience and choice," says Oland. "Bar owners and restaurateurs – including many Moosehead licensees – will benefit from more equitable pricing; and brewers like us will now have greater distribution and merchandising opportunities for our products."
Consumers can expect the new measures to take effect gradually – with beer beginning to be sold in large grocery stores by Christmas.
"We believe these changes will modernize the system by improving access and oversight, while preserving the efficiencies of the current model," says Oland. "We look forward to working with all parties to implement the changes and ensure a positive result for Ontario beer drinkers."
