A new image for a major site: the Port of Montreal's Grand Quay
Formerly Alexandra Pier, the Grand Quai du Port de Montréal and its new image are largely inspired by the marine industry and exemplified by the site's complete revitalization.
This new name reflects the role and importance of this prestigious site, the gateway for ship and cruise passengers to Montreal since the early 20th century. It evokes the massive infrastructure developed to accommodate cruise ships, those seagoing giants, and also reflects the size and importance of the new public spaces that will be open to the public as of June 3: Promenade d'Iberville, a large green rooftop, and Commencement Square, a vast lawn area along the river, with a lowered wharf that offers exceptional access to the river.
The project works to revitalize the Port of Montreal's Grand Quay will be largely completed when the site opens to the general public on June 3. The parking area remains to be completed in 2018, and an observation tower will be erected close to the river, that will open its doors in 2021.
The innovative concept developed by the architectural firm Provencher Roy makes it possible for the Port of Montreal to provide top quality reception facilities to cruise passengers and to offer the people of Greater Montreal, visitors and tourists a very special public place.
