TORONTO, April 22, 2019 /CNW/ - Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is proud to present its second annual Sustainability Report, which identifies its continued efforts in the four priority areas that together define sustainability for the organization, namely environmental stewardship, community engagement, people and culture and economic performance.
In this second edition of the report, Billy Bishop Airport has refined its sustainability priorities in a comprehensive performance summary, which provides a detailed overview of the airport's achievements as they relate to the work YTZ does to employ environmental best practices throughout its operations. Further, the performance summary clearly defines Billy Bishop Airport's future goals in sustainability and identifies areas for improvement as the airport continues to analyze the impact of its efforts.
In 2018, Billy Bishop Airport continued to implement sustainable practices, support the community and the wellbeing of its employees, and invest in programs and infrastructure that protect the environment and grow Toronto's economy. Some of these initiatives include:
- Completing a significant $35 million-dollar project to modernize the Billy Bishop Airport airfield, including replacing all of the airfield lighting and signage with energy efficient LED lighting and the construction of a Ground Run-Up Enclosure that has virtually eliminated noise complaints related to engine testing;
- Continuing to choose 100% green electricity from Bullfrog Power—the only airport in Canada to do so;
- Forming a community-based Noise Sub-Committee to further understand and mitigate noise from airport operations; and,
- Launching a Staff Wellness Program to promote both physical and mental health in the workplace.
"From completing a significant $35 million rehabilitation program to modernize the airport's airfield, to continuing to choose 100% green electricity from Bullfrog Power—the only airport in Canada to do so, to forming a community-based Noise Sub-Committee to further understand and mitigate noise from our operations, I am extremely proud of our journey to date in sustainability and look forward to implementing new initiatives to maximize our efforts and achieve our environmental goals," said Gene Cabral, Executive Vice-President of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. "By investing in the long-term future of the airport and enhancing the sustainability of our operations, we are also aiming to serve the City of Toronto by fueling the economy, connecting people, and implementing innovative programs and infrastructure that will have a meaningful and lasting impact on the world class city that we are so fortunate to live in."
