TORONTO, Oct. 22 /CNW/ - Bird Construction announced today that the Company has been awarded The Canadian Design-Build Institute's (CDBI) 8th Award of Excellence.
In recognition of its achievements as the design-builder of the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, The Canadian Design-Build Institute (CDBI) recently presented the Community Development Top Award to Bird Design-Build Limited. Located on the campus of the University of British Columbia, The Thunderbird Sports Centre is identified by CDBI for not only the demonstration of "a 'text-book' DB approach to an arena design challenge" but also the integration of "clever features" into the design that made the project unique.
Built to host the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Men's and Women's Ice Hockey events and the Paralympic Sledge Hockey games, the flexibility of the design provides the University of British Columbia with a premier, multi-purpose forum for University, community, and commercial events. Able to support both Olympic and NHL size rinks the facility can be converted to a 7500 seat performance venue providing clear sight-lines, acoustic control and staging. The facility also includes two smaller community ice rinks. Built to LEED(R) Silver certification requirements, the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre was delivered on budget and completed ahead of schedule.
Bird gratefully acknowledges the support of UBC Properties Trust, the Vancouver Olympic Committee and the University of British Columbia for this opportunity as well as their cooperation throughout the project.
