"Brace" yourself with important tips on orthodontic treatment
TORONTO, Feb. 14, 2013 /CNW/ - The most recent and accurate estimate of the cost of raising a Canadian child from birth to age 17 is a heart-stopping $243,660. And, braces are among the top investments parents make in their child's well being.
In fact, for the average family with two children requiring orthodontics, parents could be committing to a four year relationship and a $10,000 to $15,000 price tag.
"You will want to get the right fit when it comes to choosing the relationship with an orthodontist," notes Dr. Kevin Davis, principal, Davis Orthodontics.
"Not many parents change orthodontists in the middle of their child's treatment, as it's difficult for all involved," he adds.
Currently, there are approximately 300,000 Canadian children seeing orthodontists. The American Association of Orthodontists reports that North American children and adults receiving orthodontic treatment doubled to 4.4 million in 1996 from about 2.5 million in 1984.
According to Dr. Davis, here are the Top 4 Tips on what parents should know about orthodontics and how to choose the right expert:
- Check that the office has an orthodontist available 24/7 for your calls. Issues always come up and quite often it's on an evening or weekend.
- Ask about the various options and treatments as this may shorten treatment time and lengthen the amount of time between visits. Parents appreciate when visits are scheduled less often.
- Visit the office and talk to the staff. This will be a lengthy relationship of many years, so check on the demeanour of the staff and the office atmosphere. Is it a place where your child can feel comfortable?
- Review the doctor's credentials.
