OTTAWA, Feb. 13, 2019 /CNW/ - Today, the RCMP's National Division Sensitive and International Investigations Section has charged Matthew Matchett with one count of Breach of Trust under Section 122 of the Criminal Code. It is alleged that Matchett unlawfully disclosed government information to unauthorized parties.
This concludes an extensive criminal investigation which first began in December 2015, when the RCMP received a complaint alleging that cabinet confidence information about a Canadian naval supply ship contract had been leaked. Following receipt of this complaint, the RCMP seized evidence through a number of judicial authorizations. This investigation also involved other investigative measures such as witness interviews, as well as the forensic analysis of a significant number of documents.
National Division's Sensitive and International Investigations Section focuses on criminal activity that poses a threat to Canada's government institutions, public officials, the integrity of the Crown, or that imperils Canada's political, economic or social integrity.
Matchett is expected to appear in Ontario Court of Justice on March 5, 2019. As this matter is currently before the courts, the RCMP will not comment further on the matter.
