Shining in life is possible when a child has breakfast
TORONTO, Feb. 14, 2013 /CNW/ - Each day, across Canadian classrooms, 1 in 7 children are at risk of starting school on an empty stomach. Breakfast Clubs of Canada believes every child deserves an equal chance to shine in school, and a nutritious breakfast helps make that happen. That's why the Breakfast Clubs of Canada's annual Help Them Shine Campaign, which kicks off today and continues until March 10, is committed to raising funds to support the cause of feeding our children's future with a nutritious breakfast each and every morning.
During this campaign, Canadians are invited to show their support by purchasing a $1 bookmark at Walmart Canada stores across the country. Walmart will generously match customer donations, up to $2,000, at each of its stores.
"Breakfast Clubs of Canada believes every child deserves an equal chance to shine in life," says Daniel Germain, president-founder of Breakfast Clubs of Canada. "When children go to school hungry or poorly nourished, their energy levels, memory, problem-solving skills, creativity, concentration and behaviour are all negatively impacted. Every bookmark sold equals one nutritious breakfast for a child."
Breakfast Clubs of Canada serves approximately 20 million breakfasts annually to 120,000 children in 1,215 schools across Canada. The Help Them Shine Campaign aims to raise $3.0 million this year.
"Walmart is focused on helping Canadian families in need, and our support of Breakfast Clubs of Canada certainly helps us in that mission," says John Lawrence, director, corporate social responsibility at Walmart Canada. "Since 2006, we are proud to be associated with Breakfast Clubs of Canada. Funds raised from the sale of bookmarks as well as the corporate donation allow the Clubs to provide more than just food; to give children a brighter future."
All funds raised will enable Breakfast Clubs of Canada to continue to maintain its 1,215 breakfast programs as well as increase its training programs to focus on, among other things, nutrition, youth self-esteem and volunteerism.
