Brent Jolly Elected CAJ President for 2020-2022 Term
OTTAWA, ON, July 6, 2020 /CNW/ - The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) is pleased to announce Brent Jolly has been elected as president for the 2020-2022 term.
Jolly served as vice-president of the CAJ since 2018, and has chaired the association's events and advocacy committees. He's organized two national conferences (plus one cancelled due to COVID-19) and also leads frequent high-level discussions on baking, amongst other files. Jolly currently works as a director with the National NewsMedia Council of Canada (NNC), and works as an independent writer, editor, and researcher with a variety of outlets.
"In these challenging times, the role of the CAJ is more important than ever before," said Jolly. "Over the next few years I'm looking forward to strengthening the mandate of the association, while honouring the legacy established by those that have come before me. The CAJ will be a strong voice advocating on behalf of all Canadian journalists."
During the next year, the CAJ will look to advance discussions about industry diversity, as well as provide best-in-class professional development and mentoring opportunities for its members, Jolly said.
Fatima Syed has been elected to serve as vice-president for the 2020-2022 term. Syed has served on the CAJ board executive since 2019, and has played a key role in community organizing and raising the association's online profile. Syed is currently a reporter with The Logic, and has also worked for the National Observer, the Toronto Star and The Walrus.
"I'm proud to be part of an association that stands right next to journalists across the country who are fighting to create a fair, equitable and burgeoning news industry, said Syed. "The CAJ will continue to amplify these conversations and push for long-awaited change."
Jolly succeeds Karyn Pugliese who served as president for the previous term and will continue to serve on the board's executive committee in the role of past president.
"It has been a great honour to serve as president of the CAJ for the past two years," said Pugliese. "I am extremely proud of what we've accomplished in that time and I look forward to working alongside Brent, Fatima, and the rest of the CAJ team to continue that work."
